The Sony PSP May Be Gone Soon – Here is Why!
There is sad news, I’m afraid, on the horizon for all of you Sony PSP lovers and players – the Sony PSP is on its way out and may not ever come back once again! So what about all of those Blu Ray movies that you rushed out and purchased that only work on your PSP? What about warranty repairs, and new games coming out every week? And what about internet access and Sony’s lauded, but quite often slow, free national wi-fi network that allows you to Google and web surf? And even though the sales of the PSP have catapulted beyond the one million markers, Sony is still losing its butt, even amid sales being up nearly 60% since last year this time – recession and all.
Why The Sony PSP Rocked!
The Sony PSP was a revolutionary unit that merged portable gaming, the internet, an MP3 player, a Blu Ray player and a CD player into one: of course you get plenty of 32-bit games to play around with as well. But the cost of producing the unit, versus the overall sales, which video game console makers always take a loss on to later reap the profits of licensing the games out, has not quite panned out for Sony just yet. And with a winding recession looking to foot in for the long haul, not many people are rushing out to stores to drop three hundred bones on a new PSP – nor are they running to the store and shelling out nearly four hundreds bucks to get a PS3 – which is still trying to catch up to Xbox after failing to release their system in a timely manner to effectively compete.
What Preceded it Sucked!
What preceded Sony PSP, including Game Boy, Game Boy Advanced, and who could ever forget, Sega Game Gear, all sucked in their own right (I owned them all; they blew). Never before was there a machine so small and so powerful, and will there ever be such a pricey juggernaut of portable powerhouses again? I think that another culprit here is the Nintendo DS, which entirely captures and holds the children’s market for gaming, and is priced far more reasonably at fewer than two hundred dollars per unit, and the games are priced cheaper as well. Most parents don’t want their kid dropping a unit as costly as the PSP, and if Sony doesn’t see sales buck up soon, they may indeed drop production and kill the franchise to focus more on the PS3 and competing with Xbox 360 sales.
When Will There be Another System Like the PSP?
Probably not. Think about it. If Sony loses their butt, you will have one option, like you did in the past: get a Nintendo or forget portable gaming and use your cell phone to play crappy 2-bit games that blow.
A final Note:
In a final, closing note: I wish they would keep the PSP around for a while longer. However, if I were the one in charge over at Sony, I would drop a machine that was losing my business money in favor of an already established console that nets profits each quarter.
