Browser Game Roundup: Best of January 2010

A new year, a new set of browser games. 2009 was a pretty stunning year for the medium and I have high hopes for 2010. Now that art games are a significant part of the industry, a lot more creativity and style have started popping up in Internet-based titles. This has made the field considerably more crowded, but hopefully this competition will encourage innovation. It's still early in the year, so we'll have to wait to see if 2010 will be as strong a year for the browser game.

All told, January was something of a light month for browser games. I suppose the work-averse holiday season had something to do with that. Still, a few truly interesting offerings hit the usual channels. The thin stack of exemplary games means that several different genres get represented this month. There's a unique puzzle game, a simple and balanced shooter and a clever strategy title on the slab. Let's dive right in.

Awful Flash Game Roundup: Non-Game X-Treem!

Early in my college education I, like most students, was required to take a basic writing composition class. At first I scoffed at the idea that anyone who managed to make it into an accredited university would need any extra training to write standard five-paragraph essays and do proper citation. After all, we'd all presumably been doing those things since middle school, and college applications themselves require some basic essay-writing. Oh, but I was wrong. When our rather disengaged grad student instructor paired us off to edit and critique each other's work, it became shockingly apparent that half of the students in the class had absolutely no clue how to string sentences together meaningfully. I had the good fortune to work with a non-traditional (re: middle-aged) student who composed an essay comprised of little more than an imaginary argument between two abstract concepts, a corporation and its customers. As in a literal argument. On that day I didn't learn how to better compose an essay, but I did learn that the core of stupidity is simple misconception. Take the following Flash games. They're awful because the people who made them just don't seem to understand what a "game" is.

Every Day The Same Dream- Flash Game Social Commentary

Be the First to Comment!

Ever since the advent Internet-based gaming it has been possible to create a game in which business is not only not the chief concern, but isn't a concern at all. Most non-commercial games are labors of love by designers who make games because they enjoy it, others are trying to beef up their resumes for their dream jobs in the mainstream wing of the industry. A few aim for that ever-elusive achievement of the game as art. Central to art is the concept of social commentary. One of the strongest voices in socially conscious gaming today is Molleindustria, an Italian studio of online interactive agitators.

Browser Game Roundup: Best of December 2009

Because of the productivity-deficient holiday season, December isn't usually a very prolific month for new browser games. This year was no exception, but a few good offerings found their way onto the usual sites anyway. Some were very clever, some were quick electronic toys, others were just nice additions to a full genre. Let's look at one from each category.

Browser Game Roundup: Best of October

Video games often get accused of encouraging brainlessness. They're usually comprised of a lot of shooting and jumping around, so they aren't exactly mentally stimulating. Those that are tend to get lumped into the dreaded "educational game" category that, at best, has included titles like Math Blasters and a few in that small group of games marketed toward people who traditionally don't like video games in the first place, i.e. games designed with mental or physical fitness in mind. There's something to be said for the ability of browser games to plug into the entertainment potential of thinking. October had some good brain games for free play on the Internet. Here are a few of the best.

Browser Game Roundup: Best of September

For the past few years, there's been a lot of discussion surrounding the capacity of video games to be art. Of course, this requires defining art itself, but in general when we attach the "art" label to media that are designed primarily to entertain we usually mean that the entertainment has taken a backseat to the style or some kind of commentary. When it comes to video games, though, being less entertaining makes the game in question inherently less interesting, if only because of the interactive element. A game has to be fun, first and foremost. If it has a particularly unique style or manages to be emotionally resonant, then it leans toward art. The following are three very creative, fun games that came out in September.

Browser Game Roundup: Best of August (with a caveat)

Usually I feature games in this column that are just plain fun. While there were plenty of entertaining titles in August, I'd like to focus on something a little different this time around. Namely, innovation. Browser games have to strike a balance between themes and premises that are familiar enough to hook players quickly and concepts that are new or somehow different enough to stand out from the crowd. Hundreds of new games get uploaded every month and though many of them aren't very good, the sheer volume makes up for the lack of stiff competition. In an attempt to grab attention, new ideas get tossed around a lot. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, but most of the time they end up somewhere in the middle. Let's see what August had to offer in the new department.

The Guild: Season 3 On Its Way

1 New Comment: Join In!

The web series is quickly becoming a viable entertainment medium. Like Youtube with a comparatively high budget, these scrappy independent shows connect with an entire generation who prefer quick shots over longer, more traditional styles. Undoubtedly one of the most successful web series ever created is The Guild, Felicia Day's on-the-pulse sitcom about a group of socially maladjusted World of Warcraft addicts. The Guild is set to premiere its third season on August 25th.

Browser Game Roundup: Best of June

It's time once again to look at some of the best browser games available on the Internet today. June was an especially good month for more involved games. While the heart and soul of browser gaming is a quick, pick-up-and-play sensibility, there's also a strong appeal in games with a learning curve and a longer play time. Last month's entries demonstrate just how far games in Flash and other platforms have come since the infancy of the medium. Rooftop Skater, these ain't.

Browser Game Roundup: Best of April

I come from the generation that was awe-inspired by the stunning eight bits of the Nintendo Entertainment System, so I get no small amount of satisfaction from seeing games that far surpass that top toy of 1985 being produced for play on any common web browser. Add to that the fact that many of these excellent games are programmed by fewer than three people and it becomes apparent how far the art of game design has come. The following are three excellent browser games that debuted in April 2009. Read more
