I'm sure this goes without saying, but I totally disagree.

Whether I like it or not, singleplayer is going the way of the turn-based strategy game (read: the way of the dodo).  There are a few AAA standouts that do well.  There are a helluva lot more single player games that nobody buys.

I think the future of gaming centers around massive multiplayer.  Shooters became rampantly popular when they began to embrace RPG-style customization... which then allows "combined arms" in multiplayer, with a wide variety of loadouts and styles of play.  I don't know if shooters will always be as popular as they are now, but competitive multiplayer has a spice that solo play lacks.  It probably boils down to humans enjoying doing things in groups.  In case you haven't noticed, I'm arguing the social butterfly viewpoint, and you're arguing the socially anxious "leave me alone in my own little world" viewpoint... lol...

You can see this trend everywhere you look.  Assassin's Creed adds multiplayer.  Dragon Age adds multiplayer (and you can look down on them if you want, but they make a much more modern RPG than Bethesda).  Torchlight adds multiplayer.  Bungie appears to be building some sort of MMO shooter.

You know why turn-based isn't as prevalent as it used to be?  Because multiplayer turn-based doesn't work very well.  I rest my case.
