If you twitter too much ...If you twitter too much ...

As we get to the end of the year, game releases and news have been rather mellow. Perhaps it just seems that way because family-orientated games are being promoted in time for the holidays. That is the only way I can explain this week's release, QIX ++.

Browser Game Roundup: Best of November

Add Comment

The best part of the browser game as a medium is that it has become such a fertile platform for new concepts. Even if they're just little variations on long-standing ideas, the quirks that make some modern games stand out among the countless others released at the same time can be very refreshing. The most impressive games from November 2009 can best be described as clever first and foremost. They aren't enduring like some games and I doubt I'll go back to them for my own leisure entertainment, but they were great for their time.

Browser Games: A Decade in Review

Add Comment

Every month I do a retrospective of some of the best flash games of the past four weeks, which requires me to play dozens of new games just to pick out the top three. It's strange to think that such a high volume of new browser games are produced every month now. Just a few short years ago there were so few browser games in existence that every game in every language still would fill the current catalog of a given game portal. Though the most profitable change in the world of video games this decade has been the shift of console gaming to the mainstream, the most revolutionary has to be the medium's total reinvention in Internet-based titles.

Browser Game Roundup: Best of October

Video games often get accused of encouraging brainlessness. They're usually comprised of a lot of shooting and jumping around, so they aren't exactly mentally stimulating. Those that are tend to get lumped into the dreaded "educational game" category that, at best, has included titles like Math Blasters and a few in that small group of games marketed toward people who traditionally don't like video games in the first place, i.e. games designed with mental or physical fitness in mind. There's something to be said for the ability of browser games to plug into the entertainment potential of thinking. October had some good brain games for free play on the Internet. Here are a few of the best.

Bouncing Boobs on Ikki Tousen, the new PSP Game

Ikki Tousen: Xross ImpactIkki Tousen: Xross Impact

I take it this will delight fans of the game. I'm referring to the 'fight til your clothes drop' game series called Ikki Tousen. Yea, it's a one-on-one fighting game where the clothes tear off show skin rather stragetically. You can see how this one developed a fan following. Oh and did I mention that most of the fighters are girls in short skirts and big boobs? And as you guessed, there is quite a bit of boob mechanics involved in this game.

Sam and MaxSam and Max

Is it just me or does this week's XBLA have a man's best friend theme going on? First there's the talking dog in Sam and Max Beyond Time and Space, followed by the hyperactive Pixel from the Axel and Pixel game. I'm not complaining, just saying that it is a weird theme. Other than the XBLA releases, there are also upcoming news about Xbox in general as well as a little bit about the new Guild episode.

What's happening this week? Or is everyone caught up in Brutal Legend Demos and Gameplay videos? I wouldn't blame you, the game seems to be pretty mind-blowing (I'm basing this on the demo, am hoping the full game is 10 times better). So, other than gushing about, what else has been going on?

Browser Game Roundup: Best of September

Add Comment

For the past few years, there's been a lot of discussion surrounding the capacity of video games to be art. Of course, this requires defining art itself, but in general when we attach the "art" label to media that are designed primarily to entertain we usually mean that the entertainment has taken a backseat to the style or some kind of commentary. When it comes to video games, though, being less entertaining makes the game in question inherently less interesting, if only because of the interactive element. A game has to be fun, first and foremost. If it has a particularly unique style or manages to be emotionally resonant, then it leans toward art. The following are three very creative, fun games that came out in September.
